Aloha! My name is Jo-Ann M. Adams. I am running for SCC Senate District 12, and I humbly ask you to consider my candidacy. I would love to have your vote!

I was very active when serving on the SCC from 2002-2016 – first as the female rep for the LGBT Caucus and then as SCC Rep for SD12. In 2016 I focused all my efforts on helping my friend get elected as a National Convention delegate. My friend won! Meanwhile I lost my election as the SCC SD12 Rep. Not what I intended; lesson learned.

While on the SCC, I served on several committees, including the Rules, Platform and Election Committees. I was a founder of the GLBT Caucus, an active member of the Women’s Caucus and worked to support the Environmental, Hawaiian and Kupuna Caucuses. As an attorney, my experience is useful when drafting party rules and sample legislation, testifying before the legislative, etc.

During this time, I also worked with others to improve the legal standing of the LGBT community. (Trevor Project) When we started, it was an uphill battle -- even within the Party. Over twelve years, we added “sexual orientation and gender identity and expression” as protected classes in employment, housing, and public accommodations. Then we passed civil unions followed shortly by marriage equality (Civil Unions to Marriage). I watched the Party, legislature and public move from apprehension about supporting GLBT issues to pride in being on the right side of history. It was an empowering experience! Relationship building takes time, and I can put my 12 years of relationship building to work to implement a progressive, democratic agenda. I offer my experience and zeal in this area.

If November unfolds as hoped, a Blue Tsunami will sweep through the White House, Senate and House. Then we as a Party must actively move our State and our Nation toward enacting the Party’s progressive platform. We must demonstrate that our Party’s big tent shelters the marginalized, voting “blue” improves your quality of life, political involvement is empowering. The Party must support our elected officials as we move toward “a more perfect Union” which secures “the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity".

In addition to all my work with the Party, I also served on the Waikiki Neighborhood Board. I love Waikiki, Hawaii’s most diverse neighborhood and the State’s economic engine. I would love to represent the interests of SD12 and work closely with our elected officials. Waikiki NB

I hope my track record and enthusiasm have persuaded you to consider my candidacy. I would love your support. If you have any questions, please email me at, or call me at 479-7857.

Mahalo nui!
