TO THE
DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF HAWAIʻI
With courage, integrity, love of the Hawaiian Islands and Her people, five people came together on April 30, 1900 and formed the Democratic Party of Hawai’i.
Our founders – Charles Wilson, fire chief under King Kalākaua, Charles J. McCarthy, a saloon owner from Honolulu, John H. Wilson a civil engineer from Honolulu, Delbert E. Metzger, an engineer from Kauaiʻi, and our own Prince David Kawānanakoa who were all supporters of Queen Liliʻuokalani – saw the mounting corruption of the current governing body and decided to take action to protect the rights of the Kānaka Maoli, kūpuna, and keiki. Putting the needs of the people before political gain, they set the foundation of leadership for our Party in this great state of Hawai‘i.
