As Americans across the nation celebrate our country's 232nd birthday, we take a moment to reflect on the courage, sacrifice and determination of our Founding Fathers to declare their independence and change their lives to create a better future for themselves and the generations that would follow.
We believe their Spirit of Independence still lives. While George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin might not recognize their America of the 21st century, we believe they would readily acknowledge that Americans want change this year, a change to a government that helps ordinary people, a government that respects and protects the Constitution and the rights of its people, a government that trusts the people and, in turn, is trusted.
In their Declaration of Independence, the Founding Fathers boldly proclaimed that governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. Knowing the dangers they faced, they pledged to each other their lives, fortunes and sacred honor. In the America of 2008, we can do no less.
It is time for unity.
It is time for change.
It is time to put Barack Obama in the White House.
